This is the morning edition for Monday, September 7. Last Friday’s 21:30 release of the U.S. August employment report showed non-farm payrolls (NFP) at +162,000, roughly three times the market forecast (+58,000), a significantly strong result.
The view in recent months that “the labor market is rapidly cooling” has been greatly revised backwards by this single statistic.
The unemployment rate was 4.1%, in line with market expectations, and average hourly earnings rose +0.3% month-over-month as expected, but year-over-year it only rose +3.1%, making the market interpret this as “strong in activity but wage growth cooling,” which complicated market interpretation. The USD/JPY surged to 156.75 immediately after the release, indicating that our previous Scenario B was correct and stronger than expected.
The Nikkei stock average closed Friday at 65,020.94 yen (up 806.46 yen, +1.19% from the previous day), marking a rebound after five trading days. Gains in semiconductors and data-center related stocks were led by a rally driven by U.S. hyper-scale stock advances.
A new week begins today. The main focus this week (9/7–9/11) is the U.S. August CPI and PPI releases on 9/11. Domestically, on 9/8, the GDP for Q2 and the July monthly labor statistics will be announced, which may reinforce expectations for additional Bank of Japan rate hikes and thus be an important point of focus. Note that 9/7 is the day after the U.S. Labor Day, typically thin trading, and there are mentions of potential forex intervention by domestic currency authorities in some quarters.
