"Discipline and Traders" An Introduction to Market Psychology Analysis 【Chapter 9】 Understanding the World of the Mind ~ The Shocking Truth of the Brain's Energy that Makes “1 Second of Fear Feel Eternal” ~
? Mark Douglas's "Discipline and the Trader" Complete Illustrated Series, finally entering the pinnacle of the book—Part 3!【Chapter 9: Understanding the World of the Mind】is coming to you!?
In Chapters 1 through 8, we learned that markets have no fixed form or end, and that overconfidence in our own analysis or perfectionism can be the downfall.
From now on, the focus shifts to “the mindset for understanding oneself,”“Why do we understand it in our heads but still fail to follow the rules when we face a chart?”and we cut to the root causes behind this enigma! ??
Even when you reach the stop-loss line, your fingers tremble and you can’t close the position. A little retracement makes your heart race with fear.
This is not because your willpower is lacking. It is a physiological phenomenon caused by the special mechanism of the inner world of the mind“the mental world (mental environment)”that spreads through our brains.
We will thoroughly dissect the definitive differences between the physical real world and the “world of the mind,” and the shocking mechanism by which past traumas now control our trading!?
This series will continue next withChapter 10, Chapter 11… as a practical curriculum to elevate your mind to a pro leveland we will progressively upload. Please like and follow, and together install the “discipline of the winner”! ?✨

?1. The brain is the “hardware,” the mind is the “dimensionless electric energy”
To control emotions in trading, first you must accurately know the true nature of the “world of the mind” you are dealing with.
The author uses a very understandable analogy,“the relationship between the brain and the world of the mind is exactly the same as that between a computer and its software.”and explains it.
The reality we live in is a physical world made of atoms and molecules. Our “brain” is also composed of material, the hardware (the main body of a computer). It corresponds to hardware (the computer’s main unit).
On the other hand, what is the “world of the mind (memory, beliefs, emotions, desires)” running inside the brain? It corresponds to software or electrical energy.
?️Physical world (brain):Has shape, weight, and dimensions of space such as length, width, and height.
⚡World of the mind (energy):Has no form or weight and has no locationas “dimensionless non-material energy.”exists.
All chart information captured by our senses (eyes, ears, etc.) is converted into electrical signals and stored in the brain. Trying to control this formless energy with the forceful common sense of the physical world is what drives us into fierce internal conflict in the extreme states of trading.
⚡2. The “Three Core Features” of the energy that governs the world of the mind
In the mind’s formless energy, completely different from the physical world, there arethree powerful features.
① It moves at the speed of light and has no spatial dimensions
In the world of the mind, thoughts and memories move **almost instantaneously like light**.
In the physical world, it takes hours to go from Tokyo to Hokkaido, but by closing your eyes and recalling “last year’s trip,” your consciousness can instantly travel there. The mind’s world has no distance barrier, so thoughts appear instantly and directly affect your fingertips and heart rate.
② Fear dramatically alters the sense of time (one second becomes eternity)
The most striking difference between the mind and the physical world isthe perception of time.
The hands of a physical clock advance in equal one-second increments, but the time in the mind’s world expands or contracts depending on your emotions.
?Joy and happiness:Time perception slows, and moments seem to pass in an instant (the time of a winning trade feels like it ends in an instant).
?Pain and fear:The senses are relentlessly attacked, so even one second of fear or drawdown can feel like an “eternity.”
The “horrifying length of time” near the stop-loss line is a phenomenon caused by pain energy warping your time sense.
③ Accumulated energy does not disappear naturally
Physical socks wear out when you keep wearing them, but energy stored in memories and emotions in the mind does not fade away on its own if left alone.
Especially large losses or anger in trading, experiences rich with strong emotions, retain enormous power in the brain forever. Unless you consciously release them, they continue to bind your actions as invisible brakes.

?3. Why doesn’t reading a book alone change the mind?
“I read a trading book and understand in my head that cuts are important, but in the actual market I could not implement it at all….”
Haven’t you had such an experience? The author clearly explains the reason as“the difference in impact of experiences”.
The strength of energy stored in the world of the mind is proportional to“how directly that experience appealed to the senses (strength of impact)”.
?Knowledge from books:Only textual visual input, so the energy stored in the mind is of extremely weak impact..
?Great losses in actual markets:The intense movements on screen, racing heart, cold sweat, despair, etc.—a full engagement of the senses—thus, the energy is etched into the brain as incredibly powerful.
No matter how much correct rule knowledge you gain from books, as long as the fear-energy (strong) from past market experiences resides in your brain, when it truly matters, that powerful fear energy will win and control your actions.
⚖️4. The Quality of Energy That Governs Trading (Plus and Minus)
Ultimately, the energy accumulated in our mind’s world is divided into two types that the author calls the “quality of energy.”
☀️Positive energy:Joy, happiness, confidence from achieving goals, sense of security when needs are met.
⛈️Negative energy:Fear, anger, regret, pain from betrayed expectations, self-loathing.
When we are on a winning streak, positive energy overflows, allowing us to view the chart broadly and objectively.
However, when the memory of past losses and “negative energy” occupies the brain, the mind activates its defense mechanism and narrows your sight, making you miss signals of opportunity by thinking, “I don’t want to endure more pain!”This is the conclusion to free ourselves from fear and doubt in trading and to gain professional discipline.

Because there is no time in the world of the mind, the fear of a big loss a year ago can resurface as if it happened just now. When you feel anxious while looking at the chart,
“It’s not the current market that’s scary, but the past loss energy in my mind reflecting and making one second feel eternal.”Observe this objectively.
Simply recognizing that you are being pulled by ancient strong emotional energy will weaken that bondage and allow you to calmly face the probabilities before you! ✨
